Author's Note: The Chatham Writers’ Collective provides a nurturing environment for writers and artists. I first came to the collective in 1998 with lots of ambition and only a modicum of talent. A seasoned author of gave me some advice. “Reading a story is like taking a long ride on a Greyhound bus with a stranger. Would you rather that the person sitting next to you were interesting and down-to-earth or a pretentious a**hole? Well then, write the way you’d like to travel with a stranger. Another wise author said, “Every writer has a dog story in them. It’s best to write it and get it out of your system as soon as possible.”
